If you watched the news today, then you may have heard that an Egyptian idol is on the move turning on slow image photography in a museum in New York. The best hypothesis is that it is moving ever so slightly as individuals walk by causing it to rotate over the course of the day. I’m left to wonder how a fake idol turning from the vibrations of a passerby makes the news when the God of the universe is moving every day and has been forever.
Psalm 115:2 -8
2 Why do the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
3 Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.
4 But their idols are silver and gold,
made by human hands.
5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but cannot smell.
7 They have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but cannot walk,
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
8 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.
9 All you Israelites, trust in the Lord—
he is their help and shield.
10 House of Aaron, trust in the Lord—
he is their help and shield.
11 You who fear him, trust in the Lord—
he is their help and shield.
The fake idol is made by human hands. It may have a mouth, but it does not speak. It may have feet, but it cannot walk. Contrast this to the God that made the universe who is still working in the lives of people around the world today. Where would you rather put your trust? In the one that you made or the One that made you? Those that put their hope in the powerless will become like them – while those who put their trust in God have a true help and a shield. Best of all, faith in Jesus provides us with eternal life. Now that’s a newsworthy story!
